Connie Van Dyke arrived on her bicycle shortly before the Flock & Fiber show, like she has done for the last three years! She brought beautiful richly plant-dyed wool, alpaca, and angora rabbit. They are dyed with the finest dyes from around the world and locally grown.

Lakota Waldorf School Indoor Slipper project Completed!

Sonja Barkley asked the Lakota School if there was something we could make for them to help their school. They responded that the children's feet got cold in winter in the classroom and they could use indoor slippers. Sonja contacted me (Rose Sabel-Dodge) and I contacted Brown Sheep and found a pattern that could be made on single knitting needles! Brown Sheep quickly and generously sent us the yarn. We got the word out and a group of amazing people showed up to make them. Sonja is sending them off to the South Dakota school soon!

Summer Knitting

Summer is an opportunity to knit with linen, bamboo, hemp, & of course cotton! At Gossamer several of us have learned new patterns, entertained ourselves, made holiday presents, & upped our skill level all the while knitting dish & wash cloths! One great little book is "Nifty Knit Dishcloths", published by Leisure Arts.

It consisted of 16 challenging, fun, & interesting patterns. I'm presently working on #11! Here are some that are on display:

Cassandra created this lovely jumpsuit for her daughter out of our "Season" Autumn yarn from Kraemer yarns. She started out making a sweater that turned out too big and turned it into a new creation. Thank you for sharing!

Marianne Chin bought some wool felt from Gossamer for a classroom embroidery project at Forest Park Elementary. It is for an auction coming up and her aim was to make it a modern wall hanging that the children in the classroom could all be a part of. It turned out beautifully!

Customer Susie Brooks brought in two of many stockings she is making out of 100% merino wool felt for her family. She has stitched the stockings together with a blanket stitch. Too hot to be knitting a Scarf!

The other day a customer came in and remarked:
"It's too hot to be knitting scarves now".
To which I replied: "Well I'm knitting a scarf now, let me show you".
I love this summer scarf and can't wait to finish it
so I can wear it before I need a woolen one.
It's a simple lace pattern. This lovely brown/purple scarf
is made of a combo of hemp, cotton & modal(hempton).
Perfect for summer style.

Pattern:(note I just changed this to 1 ball)
Size 7 needles & 1 balls of hempton & Tapestry Needle for finishing
Cast on 20 stitches

Right leaning bias:
Row 1: K1 * yo, K2tog; rep from * to last stitch, end k1.
Row 2: Purl
Repeat these two rows 4 more times, for a total of 5 repeats.

Left leaning bias:
Row 1: K1, * ssk, yo; rep from * to last stitch, end k1.
Row 2: Purl
Repeat these two rows 4 more times, for a total of 5 repeats

Repeat from Right leaning bias 16 times more for a total of 17 repeats.

Bind of loosely in knit. Weave in ends and block.

The Community Bee/Meadow Landscape Project starts

The Community project got off to a good start!
Susan Lake taught us how to make needle-felted bees,
we got information about the project (available at the store),
instructions on knitting, crocheting, sewing bees,
and information on creating the meadow floor
out of felt pieces. The project is open to anyone
and runs from now until May 15th deadline.
The window will be up for viewing on May 23rd!

Accidental Holiday Wreath

I was making felted balls out of multi-colored wool yarn by winding them into balls. They were gifts for crafters. I needle felted the ends to secure them. I had made 40 of them and decided to stick them in the washing machine to felt them some more. When I went back to the washer 1/2 hour later it had turned into a giant wreath! I needle felted white wool balls on them and put my mistake on the door to share my silly story with the public.

This Baby quilt was made up of only 100% merino wool felt! All of the loved ones, friends and family of this woman made pieces from all over the country, the wool felt was bought here at Gossamer and distributed to people to create and it was put together on a yard of 100% merino wool felt. It turned out even better then expected and will probually be framed. People used different medians:embroidery, silk screen printing, etc... The theme was basically "woodland creatures".
Thank you for bringing it in during Gossamer's first birthday party to share! It is truly beautiful!

I've started working on gifts for my family & friends. This year I want to support local crafters and making home-made presents. Presently I'm working on colorful washcloths with Peaches & Cream cotton, a simple and satisfying project.
I'm waiting for a new batch of 100% merino wool felt in almost all colors and plant-dyed felt too. I have some ideas brewing....

After all the hard work with the constant help and creativity of Susan Lake, the project is on display in the window at Gossamer! People keep adding. So far about 46 people have contributed to it. It will keep growing and hopefully there will be enough room at the display case at OMSI (Oregon museum of science and industry) for it.
